The Covert Theatre Improv School
Want more fun, laughter and playfulness in your life? Want to improve your creativity, your emotional intelligence, confidence and ability to work with others? Want to manage anxiety better, be more resilient and just connect with other human beings in the real world?
Then the Improv School is for you! No performance experience (or desire to perform) is necessary. Improv School is where you learn the skills for life. We have classes for all ages from 8 years old to 88 year olds (and even older). All classes and workshops take place at the Covert Theatre, 51 Mackelvie Street, Ponsonby.
Improv Test Drive
Improv Test Drive is your opportunity to dip your toe into the wonderful world of improvisation, without having to commit to a workshop. It’s open to all ages, adults and kids alike - so grab a friend and come along. It’s also suitable that families can do together. Learn more ►
Improv for Adults
A 10-week course that teaches basic improv skills and performance techniques. You don’t have to be a performer to do this course. However if you do want to become a member of the Covert Theatre, then completing Improv 101 & 201 is your first step. Learn more ►
Block Workshops
Intensive one-off workshops on specific areas of improv and performance, run by performing artists from around New Zealand and the world. Open to anyone over 18, although some workshops require previous experience. Learn more ►
The Resilience Playground: Life Skills for Kids (8-17 years)
A weekly after-school improv workshop which teaches kids vital life skills in a playful and supportive environment. This workshop helps kids develop their confidence, communication skills, creative thinking, teamwork and emotional intelligence. Learn more ►
Covert Teens (13-17 years)
Graduates of The Resilience Playground can join the Covert Teens, a program for kids who want to take their improv skills to the stage. This program includes a weekly after-school workshop and regular shows at the Covert Theatre. When they turn 18, Covert Teens automatically become Covert Players with access to our Block Workshops and opportunities to perform in professional Covert Theatre shows. This is a great potential pathway for those who want a career in the performing arts. Learn more ►
Boost! School Holiday Program (8-12 years)
The ideal place for your child to build their confidence and have loads of fun during the school holidays. Our school holiday program is suitable for kids with any level of improv experience and is run by a qualified primary school teacher. The program runs for one week (Mon-Fri) and finishes with an optional performance on the last day. Learn more ►
